Clutter or Hoarding? Tackling Cleanup

Jun 30, 2022

Everyone collects treasures we feel are impossible to part with. However, there is a point when too much of a good thing can become bad. It happens when you realize there is a fine line between clutter and hoarding.

What Is Clutter?

Look around the space where you spend the most time. When you look around this space, what do you see? Are there items filling up tables because you haven't tidied up lately? If so, it's likely just clutter.

Not a big surprise. We all keep items because we may "need" them. Often, we keep items that:

  • Remind us of special moments
  • We bought because we liked it, needed it, or wanted it
  • We hope to find a use for it in the future

In most cases, those items can be removed, but why? It is not hoarding to have a collection of things you want to keep. Just remember, too much can make you feel overwhelmed when you attempt to clean and leave you feeling stressed when cleaning seems ineffective.

What Is Hoarding?

We cross the line into hoarding when our living space's clutter interrupts our daily lives. It is hoarding when every surface in your home has piles of stuff that you feel unable to toss out, according to WebMD.

We can think of it as different degrees of hoarding. The bigger the amount, the bigger the hoarding problem may be. For instance:

  • Small Hoarding Problem: This would be boxes filling your garage and clothing filling your closet.
  • Medium Hoarding Problem: This would include piles of random items on most surfaces in your home. Clothing that cannot fit in the closets laying in boxes, baskets, or on the floor.
  • Big Hoarding Problem: Trails through the items on your floor and an inability to toss out papers, receipts, broken items, etc.

You may feel stressed. When it comes time to toss out those items out, it may be almost painful. You may know it's problematic, but feel unable to change it.

How to Handle Clutter?

Excessive clutter creates an unsafe living environment. It can lead to:

  • A risk of falling
  • A higher risk of physical illness or injuries
  • An increased risk of fire
  • An increased chance of feeling depression or anxiety

Dealing with the clutter isn't easy. Cleveland Clinic suggests you enlist the help of others to tackle it.
