Relocating Your Warehouse

Jun 21, 2021

Success often means change. Reevaluating your resources, your strategies, and your buildings is a natural part of growth. Warehouses are commonly used for storing assets, records, production, and even offices and entire departments. Whether you're relocating inventory or equipment, it can become a complicated process to pack up, move out, and find a new space.

What Gets Moved

There's a lot of things that need to happen before the move, in order to decrease lost work hours/days, lost/damaged goods, and a chaotic transition. Here are a few tips to help get your warehouse organized:

Communicate first. Before giving orders, making plans, and moving things into boxes, your entire team needs to be on the same page. Who is responsible for what? Is there anyone whose perspective/expertise/opinion would be useful?

Analyze what you have. Finding out you've moved a piece of equipment that was too old to survive the move is a waste of time and money.

Create a timeline, goals, and budget for the entire transition. Use this to guide any adjustments you need to make along the way.

Take inventory.

Categorize the inventory. Use these 3 groups: Move, Sell/Donate, and Throw Away.

What Gets Left Behind

Deciding what's worth the effort of moving can be difficult. Here are a few variables to help in choosing what stays behind:

Age/Durability. If it's an item or equipment that will most likely be damaged, or not survive the move, it's better to sell it or throw it away, and replace it instead.

Value. While some things are important due to economic value, during times of transition it's important to prioritize things that build morale, and things that enhance the quality of life or identity of the business.

Usefulness. In the end, it might cheaper to replace something rather than pay to transport. Crunching the numbers on materials can end up making a huge budget difference.

For the junk that's left behind, there needs to be someone there to clean it up and toss it out efficiently and reliably.
